YouTube is one of the most popular websites in the world and is the #1 video destination online. With this easy-to-understand guide, we will help your new YouTube channel off to a flying start.

So many people start YouTube Channels and wonder why, after months of work and uploading, they still don’t have more than a few hundred subscribers.

In this guide we will take you through the first 48 hours of your new YouTube channel from registration to upload.

Your new YouTube channel identity

One of the mistakes a lot of YouTubers make is to setup an account and then upload any old videos. Be specific and make your channel about something, even if it’s about YOU.

You can be the brand or you can create one, just make sure it’s clear what it’s about.

All your content is going to match that subject. Get this bit right and YouTube will have an easier time working out what your content is about.

YouTube will give you an address based on your channel name ie. youtube.com/YourChannelName check out below for some good and bad examples of channel names.

Good YouTube channel names:

  • JoeBlogsVideoLog
  • Gaming4All
  • AwesomeCarReviews

Bad YouTube channel names:

  • DSFSFFHGH1
  • StuffiLike
  • Parsnips23 (if your channel’s about make-up, what have parsnips got to do with it?)

Customize your YouTube channel

Now you have your channel name, it’s time to customize your YouTube channel. Visit your channel and look on the right hand side for your About Me section. Edit this and write…300- 500 words about your channel.

Mention keywords that reflect the videos you will be uploading in future.

This helps YouTube to understand your content and who the audience for your new YouTube channel will be.

Keep this section up-to date over time, adding in relevant keywords and phrases as you grow.

The links section allows you to link to external websites OR videos on YouTube.

Link up all your social network profiles, Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus and also find two videos matching your content and link to them here as well.

We are trying to teach YouTube about the channel so by linking to other YouTube videos here we send a signal to YouTube about our channel’s content.

For the featured channels find five YouTube channels that match the subject of your channel and feature them here, same as above, we are teaching YouTube.

It’s worth taking a look at the channel view tab as well and setting your featured video page rather than FEED as default, it gives a nicer overall impression to people visiting your channel page.

You can organize playlists and feature one of your videos (your latest one would be best) at the top of your page.
